25 years of Trípode

25 years of Trípode

A contemporary totem

Since its creation in 1997, Trípode, a design by the Santa & Cole Team, has established itself over the years as an icon the world over.

This year, to commemorate its 25th anniversary, we are presenting two brand new lampshade styles. Together with Júlia Esqué, Barcelonese designer and textile design specialist, we complete our selection of ribbon lampshades: the fine-striped Diplomática ribbon, along with the thick-striped Bretona ribbon, available in all three Trípode sizes.

“I worked with the ribbons until I achieved something beautiful, suitable for manufacturing and capable of enriching the Trípode ensemble. We had a hard time finding the right colour until we came across black and realised how references to Anni Albers and 90s striped dresses became powerful and placed Trípode right where we wanted to see it”.

Black and white. Lines and stripes. Rhythm. Diplomática and Bretona ribbons are the result of a meticulous intervention in our classic natural ribbon lampshade. A superposition of the original colours inspired by both the fashion of the 90s, and by Anni Albers’ references in her detailed research on the Bauhaus movement – now coming together to enrich the rhythm of the ribbon binding.

“The particularity of Trípode alludes to the beauty of the fabric in tension, its decomposition and the consequent analysis of the intersection between warp and weft. I faced the project with the desire to emphasise the materiality that defines the lamp. A line, thick or thin, delimits the perimeter of the ribbon. The repetition of this line becomes a pattern that confirms its rhythm. A vertical striped pattern seen at different times in history.”

The basic colours of the ribbon collection are natural white, amber red and black. In 2013, in collaboration with the Raw Color studio in Eindhoven, new ribbon finishes were released in terracota, mustard yellow and forest green. Each one of them woven with yarns that blended together to create nuances of colour. The lampshade collection is now completed with two new striped ribbon finishes designed by Júlia Esqué.

The extraordinary in simplicity

A bundle of three black tubes joined to raise a wide ribboned lampshade that, when turned on, provides warm light and, when turned off, creates a volumetric sculpture.

A versatile lamp that can be found illuminating institutions, architecture studios, hotels, clubs, and private homes – one that creates cosy and welcoming ambiences and offers excellent light quality.

25 years later, this lamp has become an icon and is, today, a totem of contemporary design.
