Virgilio Vercelloni (Milan 1930-1995), is a recognized architect, town planner, landscape gardener, essayist and historian of architecture and town planning. Between 1963 and 1972, he taught History of Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan.
As a historian and devotee of museology, over his career he assembled an important personal library with over 10,000 titles, which currently form part of the archives of the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (Italy).Editorial coordinator of the magazine "Controspazio", edited by Paolo Portoghesi, he also collaborated on some of the main Italian architecture magazines.
The following are among the most important of his essays, most translated into several languages: La storia del paesaggio urbano di milano (Milan, 1988), "Atlante storico dell idea del giardino europeo" (Milan, 1990), "Comunicare con l architettura" (Milan, 1993) and "Atlante storico dell idea europea della città ideale" (Milan, 1994).
Dino Gavina (1922-2007,) businessman and cultural agitator who always sought to go beyond what was established, was one of the prime movers in creating the Italian Style, a vocation for quality that defines Italian furniture design worldwide. His influence resulted in some of the most emblematic pieces of furniture of the 20th century. Gavina, for whom “production is the most effective communication medium of our time, a medium that can be used as a vehicle for stupidity or for civilization,” was an aesthetic operator who succeeded in establishing a new relation between culture and industry, with mass-produced furniture and domestic and personal objects of high aesthetic and ethical value. The book is illustrated with designs by such leading creators as Marcel Breuer, the Castiglioni brothers, Kazuhide Takahama, Vico Magistretti, Carlo Scarpa, Man Ray and Sebastian Matta.
