Biographies

Català-Roca, Francesc

Francesc Català-Roca considered himself a ‘professional of photography’ rather than an artist. From a desire to document what surrounded him, he captured thourgh his lens ordinary life scenes. He was introduced to this world by his father, Pere Català i Pic, and at a young age he started collaborating with publications such as Destino and La Vanguardia. His work evolves firmly around the idea of enhancing planes and lines of buildings. The frontal perspectives on his photographs bring to light the duality between the symmetry and centrality of what is being portrayed. Counterpoints and contrasts are common in his practice enabling him to present strong and captivating images. During the 50s, Català-Roca belonged to that community of Spanish artist willing to renovate the cultural landscape. Due to his closeness to some of the members, he will become the official photographer of Grupo R, an architectural movement committed with breaking away from post-civil war Spanish architecture.
