Altar frontals were movable elements placed in front of the altar table to decorate and enhance it during liturgical celebrations. In major churches, they were crafted from luxurious materials such as textiles, precious metals, or gemstones. However, in 12th- and 13th-century Catalonia, polychrome wooden frontals became widespread due to their lower cost. This group of Catalan Romanesque frontals, preserved in various museums, forms a unique collection in Europe for its quantity, quality, and antiquity. The Frontal from La Seu d0Urgell (Frontal of the Apostles) is onsidered one of the masterpieces of the MNAC’s panel painting collection and among the oldest frontals, together with the one from Ix, produced by the same workshop. It represents the canonical composition of Catalan frontals: Christ in Majesty at the center, within a double mandorla of Carolingian influence, holding the Book of Life sealed with seven seals and blessing with his right hand. Surrounding him are twelve apostles arranged symmetrically in hierarchical perspective. Iconographic details include Saint Peter with keys and Saint Paul with a bald head, identifying symbols for each.
