Composition XX closely follows the principles of geometric abstraction advocated in the pages of De Stijl. According to Joop Joosten, Van Doesburg’s stay at Mondrian’s home in Paris in February 1920 was decisive in his full embrace of abstraction. The grid structure—previously used by Mondrian and Huszár in late 1918, before Van Doesburg himself adopted it—was not, for him, a rigid and regular system as it was for Mondrian, but rather a flexible and irregular one. Similarly, Van Doesburg was not entirely orthodox in his use of color, as the primary tones here appear noticeably softened.

Without glass, whenever possible

Many original works are displayed without glass. To preserve the same aesthetic and presence, we recommend doing the same. The result is more natural, glare-free, and visually striking.

Mounting on rigid backing (PVC)

Ask your framer to mount the artwork onto a rigid backing. PVC is lightweight, stable, and helps prevent warping over time. It’s also essential if you choose to frame without glass.
