The Americana series was conceived by Miguel Milá in the mid-1960s as a tribute to the articulated lamps designed by George Hansen in the 1950s. These were based on the swinging motion of a segmented arm, divided at its midpoint by a hinge, allowing the horizontal axis to extend or contract from the center.

Milá’s Americana also revolves around an articulated arm, but this time with a single, right-angled segment. Here, the swivel point is found at the top of the shaft, enabling the horizontal rotation of the shade while significantly reducing leverage.
