J.M. Tremoleda
Barcelona, 1946
Josep Maria Tremoleda was born in Barcelona in 1946 and was part of the first graduating class in higher design studies at Escola Massana. There he met Josep Maria Massana, with whom he would form a long-standing and complementary professional partnership. Together, they founded the collective Equip de Disseny in 1968, alongside Francesc Miravitlles and Josep Domènech. Five years later, they launched Mobles 114 with Mariano Ferrer—a project that combined retail, interior design studio, and furniture manufacturing, and would become a driving force behind contemporary Catalan design.
From Mobles 114, they promoted a functional and accessible aesthetic grounded in constructive clarity and production efficiency, deliberately avoiding formal extravagance. In addition to publishing works by third-party designers like Carles Riart, they developed their own pieces with a clear intent of service and standardized production. Notable examples include the Tria shelving system (1978), the Gira table lamp (1978), and the Havana bench (1990).
Beyond his work as a designer, Tremoleda was active in design’s professional sphere: he presided over ADI-FAD between 1989 and 1990, and in 1993 he spearheaded the creation of RED (Reunión de Empresas de Diseño), Spain’s leading design business association, serving as its first president. In 2001, Mobles 114 received the Spanish National Design Award in recognition of its exemplary career.
