Luia Corsini

1994

Luia Corsini was raised between Rome and New York. Splitting her time between both cities, made her develop a deep interest in the beauty of two very different types of architecture. Captured by the cultural effervescence of both places, she decided to embark on a journey as an artist by studying Fine Arts at NYU.

Luia Corsini was raised between Rome and New York. Splitting her time between both cities, made her develop a deep interest in the beauty of two very different types of architecture. Captured by the cultural effervescence of both places, she decided to embark on a journey as an artist by studying Fine Arts at NYU.

During her longer stay in New York, she became passionate about the Colour field painting movement, that emerged in the city during the mid-twentieth century. She also studied thoroughly the work of key figures of that time, such as Agnes Martin, Frank Stella, Mark Rothko and Donald Judd. Luia Corsini’s interest in Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism is key in her practice. Her pieces stem conceptually from Rosalind Kraus’ ideas presented in her essay Grids, where she describes the grid as a key concept to understand modern art.

After graduating, she spent some time in Barcelona, later moved to Malibu and she is currently based in Mexico City. The architecture of all these cities have clearly influenced her compositions. Through a rich colour palette and geometric forms, Corsini conveys her fascination for the Barragan buildings, the skyscrapers in New York or the dreamy, soft tones of the Californian coast. Through her practice, Corsini offers a contemporary, fresh perspective on minimalism and abstraction, two movements which have been fundamental in shaping her pictorial language.
