Anthony Dickens
Dorset, 1975
Anthony Dickens founded his first design studio in London in 1998, where he crafted and produced innovative creations that questioned the everyday. That early freedom led him, in 2015, to establish Studio Make Believe—a collaborative space where he develops objects that respond to the needs of global brands such as Ben & Jerry’s, Red Bull, and Absolut.
His first major recognition came in 2006 with the Origami table series, inspired by the stability and hospitality of hand-carved African tables. The following year, he introduced the Anglepoise® Fifty lamp, designed for engineers and draftsmen who needed precise, warm lighting. The piece won Design of the Year 2007 at the Design Museum in London.
In 2010, Dickens traveled to Japan, where he was captivated by the subtle lighting of its interior spaces and the craft tradition of bamboo and paper. From that experience came the sculptural lamp Tekiò, inspired by 10th-century Japanese designs, yet deeply reflective of his own philosophy: transformable, quiet, poetic light. In 2018, Tekiò was awarded the ADI-FAD Gold Delta for best indoor lighting product.
A cross-disciplinary designer with a narrative and experimental mindset, Anthony Dickens moves seamlessly between furniture, lighting, domestic objects, and exploratory design. From watches to guitars, his work reflects a playful, precise, and culturally attuned vision—always in dialogue between function and emotion.
Today, Anthony Dickens remains active in his London studio.
