An architect specializing in theater restoration, Lluís Dilmé has overseen some of the most emblematic stage renovations in Catalonia, including the reconstruction of Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu after the devastating fire of 1994. Born in Salt, a small industrial town near Girona with no real architectural or theatrical tradition, Lluís Dilmé carved out an unexpected path to become one of Catalonia’s leading voices in theater restoration. He studied architecture at ETSAB in Barcelona and, before graduating, joined the studio of Ignasi de Solà-Morales, where he helped restore the historic theaters of Valls and Torelló.

That early experience sparked a lifelong passion for theater architecture, which reached its defining moment with the reconstruction of Barcelona’s iconic Gran Teatre del Liceu after the devastating fire of 1994. Working alongside Xavier Fabré, Eulàlia Serra, and Solà-Morales, Dilmé helped bring the opera house back to life—earning the team the Generalitat’s National Heritage Award. The project extended beyond architecture to include custom furnishings, such as the Liceo lamp, now part of Santa & Cole’s collection.

In 2012, Dilmé and Fabré founded their own practice, continuing to work on heritage sites such as the Teatre Principal in Sabadell, the Teatre Guastavino in Vilassar de Dalt, and the Montserrat Monastery—reaffirming their commitment to an architecture in service of culture.
