Liubov Popova was one of the most innovative artists of the Russian avant-garde. Trained in painting in Moscow, Italy, and Paris, her work evolved from Cubo-Futurism to Suprematism and ultimately Constructivist abstraction. A member of Kazimir Malevich’s Supremus group, Popova sought an art that could not only reflect but transform the world. In 1921, she abandoned easel painting to focus on textile, set, and graphic design, aligning with Constructivist ideals and the Soviet vision of art as a tool for societal change. Her rational, dynamic compositions place her among the most influential artists of the 20th century. She died prematurely at age 35 due to a scarlet fever epidemic, cutting short a brilliant artistic trajectory.
