J.M. Massana
Barcelona, 1947
Born in Barcelona in 1947, Josep Maria Massana was part of the first graduating class in design from the Escola Massana. There, he met Josep Maria Tremoleda, with whom he founded the collective Equip de Disseny in 1968, alongside Francesc Miravitlles and Josep Domènech. Five years later, Massana and Tremoleda co-founded Mobles 114 with Mariano Ferrer—a hybrid project combining retail, interior design, and furniture manufacturing that became a driving force of contemporary Catalan design.
From Mobles 114, they promoted a functional and accessible aesthetic grounded in constructive clarity and production efficiency, deliberately avoiding formal extravagance. In addition to publishing works by third-party designers like Carles Riart, they developed their own pieces with a clear intent of service and standardized production. Notable examples include the Tria shelving system (1978), the Gira table lamp (1978), and the Havana bench (1990).
In 2001, Mobles 114 was awarded Spain’s National Design Prize in recognition of a consistent and forward-looking career.
