DAMO Design’s ground-floor apartment in Wenzhou, China, finds warmth amid the noise through the interplay of inside and out.
In China’s large cities, where urban density and relentless pace are the norm, this apartment offers an alternative: a domestic refuge, calm and warm, “with a great capacity for hospitality,” as its owner Xiaoxiong puts it — who also runs a fashion select shop. The constant street traffic and the ground-floor position set up a concrete tension: how to keep the intimacy of a home without closing it off from the outside?

DAMO’s answer comes in the form of lattices and filtering elements that screen views and blur the boundary between inside and out. Light passes through these surfaces casting shifting shadows and a sense of soft ambiguity throughout the day.

The intervention starts from one essential decision: free the communal areas and let flow and spontaneity move through the home unobstructed. The old balcony is absorbed into the living room, extending it toward the outside and turning the façade into a wide surface of exchange between house and city. Running along the windows, a continuous piece of wooden furniture handles storage while following the horizontal logic of the floor plan — without breaking the unified reading of the space. An interior that grows from the combination of fixed architecture and design pieces (icons without ostentation).

Nature maintains a constant presence: framed views from inside work as living green paintings, and the mix of natural materials and warm tones deepens the sense of retreat. Even the spaces designed for pets are folded into the same domestic logic, treating the home as a shared ecosystem.

When night falls, the apartment reveals a second identity. Artificial light, distributed across different points and heights, replaces daylight with a discreet and enveloping presence. The lamps come on gradually, drawing intimate scenes that invite stillness. Básica M1, Básica Mínima, Cestita Batería, Sylvestrina, Babel, TMM aplique — these are the models that accompany this second life of the home, among filters, reflections and transparencies, unfolding at a slower pace than the street outside.

“When life and emotion start to fill a space, when art and spirit enrich it, a home ceases to be a mere container.”
