Bea Sarrias. Architecture in Color

Sert, Barragán and Rudolph Meet Mondrian. The exhibition Bea Sarrias. Architecture in Color presents a new body of work that explores how modern architecture not only draws from art, but also becomes an active source for contemporary painting.

The architectures of Josep Lluís Sert, Luis Barragán and Paul Rudolph function here as territories of pictorial exploration, resonating with the legacy of Piet Mondrian as a latent visual matrix. Without explicitly referencing him, his language runs through the exhibition like an invisible thread connecting the three architects.

The exhibition unfolds through maps that also operate as storyboards of the creative process: a network of sketches, drawings, studies, notebooks and experimental pictorial traces that, over time, evolve into works on canvas. In this way, Bea Sarrias’s pictorial process reveals itself as an architecture in its own right.

Bea Sarrias (Barcelona, 1978) develops a body of work centred on the representation of architecture and light, where human presence is sensed through objects and silences. Influenced by 20th-century American realism, her practice combines research and observation to portray buildings as living settings filled with memory. In this project, Sarrias acts as a mediator between architecture and painting, reinterpreting three forms of modernity and turning colour into a living element that guides the viewer through an architectural imaginary.

Architecture in Color is part of UNESCO’s Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture and forms part of an international itinerary connecting three key sites of modern architectural thought: Barcelona, Mexico City and New York. In each venue, the project establishes a dialogue between architecture and painting, proposing a cross-reading of modernity through color and light.
