Oscar Tusquets

, 1941
Architect by training, designer by adaptation, painter by vocation, and writer by sheer desire, Óscar Tusquets embodies the figure of the total artist. His work—diverse and provocative—is a celebration of art as a way of life, cultivated with humor and depth.

Born in Barcelona in 1941, Óscar Tusquets earned his degree in architecture from ETSAB while also attending the Llotja School of Arts and Crafts. His training was solidified in the studio of Federico Correa and Alfonso Milà, where he met Lluís Clotet—a collaborator with whom he would go on to share a long and prolific partnership.

In 1964, they founded Studio PER, where they developed their first architectural works, including the Casa Fullà, the Georgina belvedere, and a house in Pantelleria. In 1975, he designed the Mae West Room at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres alongside his mentor and friend Salvador Dalí, who later appointed him lifetime trustee of the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. Other standout works include the renovation of the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas, and the Toledo metro station in Naples.

Alongside his architectural work, Tusquets built a notable career in industrial design. He was a founding partner of BD Barcelona Design (1972), where he created iconic pieces such as the Banco Catalano and the Hypóstila shelving system. Working independently, he went on to design the Varius and Gaulino chairs and collaborated with brands like Alessi, Zanotta, and Driade—a journey that would eventually lead to his work entering the permanent collections of MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, and the Vitra Design Museum.

Over the course of his career, he has received the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, the Spanish National Design Award, the French Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, two Ciutat de Barcelona awards, and numerous FAD and Delta prizes. Beyond the accolades, his work reflects a singular approach to design: an open dialogue between utility and emotion, between culture and pleasure.
