Lagranja Design
Barcelona, 2002
Lagranja Design was founded in 2002 in Barcelona’s Gràcia neighborhood, taking its name from the tiny street—La Granja—where it all began. Created by Gerard Sanmartí and Gabriele Schiavon, who met while working at Fabrica, the creative lab of the Benetton Group, the studio was born out of a simple idea: to take a chance on design. Today, Lagranja is one of Europe’s most respected design firms.
Straddling Spain and Italy, Lagranja Design has tackled everything from industrial design and exhibition installations to commercial interiors and private homes—always with people at the heart of every project. Their hands-on approach and careful attention to every detail have shaped a distinctive voice, though as they like to say, “when you do so many things, you have to treat every project differently.”
Some of their best-known works include the Key bicycle rack (2007), produced by Urbidermis, sister company to Santa & Cole, and winner of both the IDEA Award and the Red Dot “Best of the Best”; the playful Uto lamp (2005) for Foscarini; and the exhibition design for Espai Gaudí at La Pedrera (2006), a project that balanced heritage sensitivity with contemporary functionality.
Alongside their creative work, both Sanmartí and Schiavon have maintained a strong commitment to teaching, sharing their vision with new generations of designers in schools across Barcelona, Venice, and Utrecht.
