Gonzalo Milá
Barcelona, 1967
Born in Barcelona in 1967, Gonzalo Milá began studying architecture but soon gravitated toward industrial design, drawn by the hands-on nature of the creative process and the ability to oversee every detail. While still a student at Elisava, he worked alongside his father, the renowned designer Miguel Milá, and collaborated with Luis Victory, with whom he earned his first design award: second prize in Castilla-La Mancha’s furniture competition for the Agarrón Espiga coat rack.
In the early 1990s, he co-founded the studio Gòtic Sud alongside a group of architects, designers, and photographers, transforming an old industrial warehouse in Barcelona’s historic center into a creative hub. There, he partnered with Juan Carlos Inés to establish Inés-Milá, an industrial design studio that gave rise to playful and unconventional pieces: the Tutombas Pranha lounger, the Sillarga and Sicurta granite beach loungers for Barcelona’s Bogatell beach, and Segado, a quirky space marker for terraces and markets that won recognition from AEPD.
Eventually, he went on to open his own practice, Milá Diseño, where he combined interior design projects—including the restoration of an apartment in Gaudí’s iconic La Pedrera—with product design. Among his highlights from this period is the Rama lighting collection (2000–2004) for Urbidermis, which received the ADI-FAD Silver Delta Award for its clever versatility and unified design language.
Gonzalo Milá continues to work with a focus on creating objects that surprise and improve daily life by blending new technologies with traditional craftsmanship. His honest, functional urban furniture now shapes many public spaces across Spain and has earned multiple industrial design awards.
