Originally intended to marry her cousin, Prince Balthasar Charles\u2014who died in 1646\u2014she ultimately wed her uncle, King Philip IV. Their children included Infanta Margarita, Prince Felipe Pr\u00f3spero, and the future Charles II. As Philip IV\u2019s second wife, Mariana served as regent after his death in 1665, a role she held until 1675. She died on May 16, 1696.\r\n\r\nIn this portrait, the queen is depicted in bust-length, dressed in luxurious silks, sheer fabrics, ornate jewelry, and a voluminous wig.
