Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) Barcelona School of Management opted for Dear Design interior design studio for the refurbishment of its classrooms, library and hall. The project received the German Design Award 2018 for the best interior architecture project on account of the fact that it adapted the recent teaching reform, focussed on the teaching/learning process and educational relations, to the new classrooms.

Stage two of the project – transforming the library into a gallery – seeks to make it a benchmark place in Barcelona for students from a range of fields and disciplines to establish synergies in a cross-disciplinary fashion. The space is formed by a study area and another for socialising where projections, presentations, conferences and events, etc., can unfold simultaneously.

In order to create a welcoming atmosphere conducive to relations between colleagues and friends, the architecture studio removed the false ceiling and designed a grid pattern with a random appearance in order to hang the various presentation mediums and whiteboards. Moreover, in order to promote a warm ambience and a sense of mobility in the area, the Cala and TMM floor lamps by Marset and Santa & Cole were chosen.

For the furniture, Dear Design chose objects in a casual style which could be adapted to various uses, produced by Open Desk, Vitra, Sancal and Enea. They also designed a tailored structure for the stands and the battery charging unit for mobile devices and computers.

The result: open, multi-purpose spaces with dynamic, modular furniture conducive to new teaching/learning processes and educational relations.
