Small, independent and global
Santa & Cole is a small, independent and global editor of design products, with its roots in Belloch (Barcelona, Spain). We have been editing since 1985, when the company was first founded. By editing we mean preparing a work for the public domain, we mean adapting an item for everyone’s use. What a book editor does with stories, we do with objects.
More than eighty creators have contributed to a rich catalogue of furniture and lighting products originating in very different contexts, by renowned designers such as Antoni Arola, Miguel Milá, André Ricard and llmari Tapiovaara.
Acute and attentive to quality and detail, Santa & Cole outsources all of its industrial production to an extensive network of suppliers, mainly in Spain, but also in other countries such as Japan, where the washi paper for our Tekiò lamp is made.
Our mission is to build, safeguard and disseminate knowledge through design objects. Objects whose quality is recognisable at the touch of a hand, and that enrich people’s lives, whether at home or in shared environments. Our philosophy is more modern than futurist and we are more intrigued by silence than by stridency.
Our focus is not the present market, but the future one; not Barcelona, but the world; not fashion, but history.
Committed to industrial design since 1985
Santa & Cole was founded by Nina Masó, Javier Nieto Santa and Gabriel Ordeig Cole in 1985, during a decade of upheaval in Spain when anything seemed possible in the wake of the dictatorship.
The early days, creating exceptional lamps for some of Barcelona’s most famous bars, soon led to commissions to light the homes of regular patrons of some of those venues. At a time when halogen lamps (cool to the touch, with a bluish light) were all the rage, Santa & Cole advocated the use of natural materials like wood, stitched cardboard or ribbons. In some cases, existing designs were revisited, and in others, new ones, such as the Básica lamp, were developed. We shifted the mood from technical and cold to human and warm.
In the 1990s, in the joyful aftermath of the Barcelona Olympics, some of the larger lamps, modular lamps, were born, such as the Estadio or the Moaré, responding to the need to illuminate public places.
Since LED lighting stormed onto the scene at the dawn of the 21st century, we have continued our quest for light that enhances the beauty of objects, shadows and people. Examples of this are the Cirio and Tekiò series. We remain committed to creating ambiences and moods, night and day, that serve to improve habitability at home or elsewhere.
We are editors
We have been editing objects since 1985, when the company was first founded. A necessarily humble trade that pays tribute to the creative talent of authors. We carefully select only those designs that differentiate us. Our collection is distinctly recognisable in the shape of a lamp, a piece of furniture or a book. Found objects, designed objects, edited objects. Works by our creators, whose authorship is protected and registered.
Ours is an enquiry into industrial design, the art of paying attention to everyday objects to identify their best usage experience, which leads to a reflection on material culture. All the products we edit answer a question or respond to a need, and each one stands behind its response. We have developed a catalogue combining classics and contemporaries together with more than eighty very diverse creators.
When we edit objects, we pursue the aesthetics of emotion.
Material culture is related to the physical world we live in, and regards the circumstance of objects or technologies in which we are immersed. Individuals and human groups make ‘things’ to meet our needs, and these artificial creations identify our knowledge and reveal our most intimate traits. Material culture, like its immaterial antithesis, may or may not be prone to goodness and beauty. It may be oriented towards humility or ostentation, virtue or power. Material culture says as much about individuals as does the immaterial, and, equally, it may cultivate or coarsen them.
The material culture we defend nurtures beauty in our daily life, and therefore naturally involves looking at all the objects that surround us. Because they are all transcendent in their own way. Hence, caring for the context in which our life materially unfolds, trying to avail ourselves of just the right number of useful, sober and effective objects, is characteristic of a non-consumerist and highly valued culture. After all, our personal objects define us as much as our most intimate proclivities.
In every new product, choosing the right materials is one of the most important stages of our creative process. Being editors and not depending on machinery of our own, we are free to carefully tailor the materials and processes to each specific case and its requirements. We work with the best suppliers and industrial craftsmen, mainly in Spain, ensuring excellent standards of quality to the eye and to the touch.
New technologies help us to ensure a more responsible treatment of production processes, to discover materials that respect the environment, and to design lighting systems that promote energy saving and lighting quality at home and in the city.
Santa & Cole only works on original designs that can be protected, and that are either registered by our authors or internally generated. And we always defend our rights around the world.

How to recognise a fake
Santa & Cole products are always identified by our brand and/or copyright. The presentation and packaging of the object should also be a primary indication of its origin. But the real difference lies in the nobility of the materials, the careful craftsmanship of the finishing and the quality of the detail.
