Digamma

When Gardella wanted to steer away from the rigid tenets of the Modern Movement (in which he had been formed and involved for years) he designed Digamma. This armchair features a rational body with geometric shapes forming the seat and backrest, a metal structure, and polished brass feet infused with a heavy dose of irony: his famous ‘duck feet’. The Digamma features a three position reclining mechanism, and can be complemented by a matching footrest.

An architect, engineer and designer, Ignazio Gardella founded the Milan-based Azucena editing agency in 1947 along with Luigi Caccia Dominioni, the first agency to produce high-quality design in Italy. This is when the first edition of Digamma was produced, later edited by Dino Gavina for his catalogue and, on assignment by Gavina, under the responsibility of Santa & Cole since 2005.
