“If we want big trees, and we want them to develop their full aerial potential, we must give them the right subsoil”
Josep Selga

On 22 and 23 October last, architects, landscape gardeners and technicians from the public and private sector spent two days discussing the design of the public space.

The conference focused on proposals and experiences in the urban design of the three planes on which the public space is developed – the vertical plane, the surface and the subsoil -, with the aim of creating a three-dimensional green roof, which contributes to confronting one of the main challenges of contemporary cities: sustainability in the information society.

The first day, held in Santa & Cole's headquarters in Parc de Belloch (La Roca del Vallès), dealt with the complexity of the urban subsoil and the application of structural soils as a solution for a correct planning of trees in cities. In Vivers Ter (Bescanó, Girona) the presentation focused on the use of green roofs and green walls through the development of different national and international projects.

On this occasion Santa & Cole's Tree Nursery Division presented the new Airpot© container which is used to prevent the circling of the roots of the trees grown in its nursery, as well as its new catalogue, a practical tool which will allow architects and landscape gardeners to select the most appropriate species for their projects in accordance with objective parameters.

More than a hundred professionals from the sector attended this first conference on The strata of the city, and their interest in and appreciation of the subjects discussed encourage us to continue to organize encounters in which to debate on the future of trees in the urban framework.
