Ramón Benedito

Barcelona, 1949

Ramón Benedito

Ramón Benedito has been one of the most outstanding Spanish designers of advanced technological products. He also participated in the 80s in one of the few experimental groups of design in Spain, Transatlantic.

Benedito was born in 1949 in Barcelona, and studied in the Elisava design school. At the outset of his career, he worked on massive plastic objects, but in the 80s he chose to create objects for specialized industries, such as laboratories, opticians, telecommunications, microelectronics, high fidelity, and precision instruments. His designs, highly rational and rigorous, reveal however a warm and Mediterranean line of thought. In 1973 he founded Benedito Design with Maite Prat, a studio specialized in product design and development, in particular in appliances and computer equipment, technical and scientific instruments, lighting, domestic appliances, packaging, and furniture. In 2000 the studio moved to its new headquarters in Sant Cugat, and in 2004 the second generation joined the company through her daughter, architect Gae Benedito.

In 1984, Benedito created the experimental design group Transatlantic, together with Josep Puig and Lluís Morillas, one of the few groups of transgressor design that emerged in Spain during the 80s. They carried out an outstanding technological and formal research task, without restriction. Transatlantic split in 1989, although Benedito has continued on his own in the experimental line.

Benedito's work is very diversified, his projects include the most varied range of products: they go from a fax to a coffee machine, from office furniture to a personal computer, a stool or a car. All of them have in common that they have been planned with rigor, "a guarantee that all of the aspects that are part of the design of a product will serve at their best their purpose».

Ramon Benedito was awarded in 1992 the Spanish National Design Prize (Premio Nacional de Diseño). He has also received the 1982 Premio a la Innovación Tecnológica in the category of Industrial Design, the Premio Valencia Innovación 1991, as well as the ADI-FAD awards in 1986, 1995, 1997, and 2000. Benedito also undertakes an intense teaching task, at the design schools Eina, Elisava, BCD (Barcelona Center of Design), Escuela de Artes y Técnicas de la Moda and at the UPC (Politechnical University of Catalonia), and often participates in national and international seminars. His work also arises curiosity abroad: in 2004 he showed his work in the Istituto Europeo di Design, in the Diego Portales University in Santiago de Chile and at the University of Shangai. in May 2005 he exhibited it at the Spanish Embassy in Tokyo, and in 2006 at the International Fair in Valencia.Su obra genera asimismo interés en el extranjero: en 2004 presentó su trabajo en el Istituto Europeo di Design, en la Universidad Diego Portales de Santiago de Chile y en la Universidad de Shangai.
