This first Conference on urban elements and sustainability was attended by industrial designers, municipal architects and managers from the environment and central services areas of various Catalan municipalities.

Six papers were presented during the conference, introducing the following projects for the development and sustainable application of urban elements: “The life cycle of urban elements”, by Mia Serra, publisher of Santa & Cole Urban; “Cradle to Cradle: applied Biophilia”, by Ignasi Cubiñà, Director of Eco Intelligent Growth; “FSC certified wood”, by María José Fernandez-Caballero, FSC Spain; “Responsible purchasing of urban elements”, by Andreu Puig, Municipal Manager of Barcelona City Council; “22@: LED technology and urbiotic city”, by Pedro Díaz, Business Development Manager of Endesa Network Factory, and Antoni Brey, General Manager of Urbiótica; and “Trees in urban design”, by Josep Selga, publisher of Santa & Cole Forestry.

The success and the interest aroused by this initiative encourage us to consider future conferences, promoting a joint reflection on the importance of introducing sustainability and innovation criteria into all spheres of design, production, purchasing and installation of urban elements. We thus hope to contribute to improving the quality of life of people and, as far as possible, to conserving our planet's natural spaces.
