Amigo

AMIGO (meaning friend in Spanish, which is an acronym of “aplique de Miguel y Gonzalo”, in other words, the wall lamp designed by Miguel and Gonzalo) is the first product jointly designed by the aforementioned father and son duo, top representatives of two generations of Spanish design.

It comprises a central opaque disc with a light source, with vertical translucent walls forming a kind of inner shade to disperse the light outwards. Since it is screwed into an outer fixture with the same height but a larger diameter, the distance between the two gives the effect of a luminous ring that does not shine the light out sideways. In addition to protecting electrical components, its airtight resistance prevents insects from nesting inside it to keep it clean and maintaining an even glow.

A design commissioned by Santa & Cole on account of the work to reform the company’s headquarters in Parc de Belloch, where it repeatedly appears on pergolas and passageways, the Amigo wall lamp is an exercise of flawless simplicity where nothing is surplus to requirements.

Barcelona, 1967

After sharing a first studio with a friend, Gonzalo Milá founded Milá Diseño, together with Miguel and Micaela Milá, his father and sister. He designed the Rama street lights, edited by Santa & Cole / Ubidermis, which was awarded the Silver Delta in 2001. From that year on, he has had his own studio, where he practises rigorous essentialism and designs in a humane way, concerned about utility.

Milá was born in 1967 and studied architecture in Barcelona. He started working at the same time in the interior and industrial design studio of Miguel Milá (his father), and also collaborated with Luis Victory, with whom he already won the 2nd Castilla-La Mancha furniture award for their Arragón espiga clothes stand.

Barcelona, 1931

Miguel Milá, an interior designer, inventor and bricoleur, and a pioneer in his field in Spain, began working in the 1950s. With objects, resources and raw materials hard to come by at that time, Milá started designing his own furniture and lamps and soon set up his own company, Tramo (from the Spanish Tra-bajos Mo-lestos, ‘Annoying Jobs’). Many of his pieces have become true contemporary classics. In 2016, the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture in Spain awarded him the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. He has won numerous ADI awards (Barcelona), the first Spanish National Design Award (tied with André Ricard), and the ADI Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievements.

Miguel Milá was born in a Catalan aristocratic family with strong links with the artistic world (his ancestors assigned the Milá House, also known as La Pedrera, to Gaudí), and started working as an interior designer in the architecture studio of his brother Alfonso Milá and Federico Correa. It was the end of the 50s, a time of crisis when Spain hardly knew what industrial design was.
