Beth Galí. 1998

NEW LED

Street lamp for large urban spaces has extraordinary plastic beauty. Inspired by the large cranes at loading docks, it was originally designed in order to light up the port area at Rotterdam.

It comprises two well-known parts: an initial Corten steel shaft and two galvanised steel tubes, one of which holds up to 5 floodlights and the other is a brace that lends rigidity to the entire structure.

Fake copies of the LATINA street lamp have been erected in Doha (Qatar) right along Al Waab Street (see www.qatarfakes.com), in a line of almost a thousand units along about 10 km. This case comprises the biggest public rights infringement in the history of design and is currently under judgement in the courts of Barcelona.

Barcelona, 1950

Galí was one of the 'Generation of the 1980s' architects that sought to make Barcelona into a city of design. As an architect, urban planner and designer her work contributed to achieving the international prestige of Catalan architecture at the end of the 20th century.

The new paradigm in town-planning and architecture that resulted from the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games was sold abroad as the "Barcelona model".
